e-mail crashes

Here is the problem. Somewhere in the process of
downloading SR1 and SR2 and the recommended patches,
Outlook looses e-mail functionality, starts not sending,
crashing, somewhat receiving, sending out error messages.
It's a nightmare. Yesterday I went to system restore and
went to a time before I downloaded the SR1 and SR2 and
other patches, and then Outlook worked just fine. What is
going on?
