e-mail doesn't appear until another folder is clicked

Hi,

I've got a user at my company who's having a wierd e-mail problem using
Outlook 2000. When he gets new e-mail, often it doesn't appear in his in
box. If he clicks on any other folder, such as deleted items, or sent items,
then all of a sudden 2 new messages may appear in his in-box (could be any
number). Clicking on the send/receive button doesn't make them appear, nor
does clicking on a menu item or minimizing and maximizing the screen.

Has anyone seen this before? Any suggestions?

Make sure you have all updates applied to both Windows (XP?) and Office
2000. If it still doesn't work make sure your virusscanner isn't blocking
traffic for Outlook (most likely it is currently blocking UDP traffic).

Virus scanner, Robert? I suspect you mean firewall.

Robert,

Thanks very much. It's unlikely to be the firewall or virus scanner since
the e-mail does arrive after clicking another folder. I will check the
Office updates. I'm pretty sure the windows updates are up-to-date.

Thanks again,

Actually it is very likely that it is the firewall. Clicking a folder to
update it is a different mechanism than waiting for it to update.

It's VERY likely to be the firewall if the mail appears when you switch
folders because that switching causes Outlook to poll the server with
non-UDP methods.

Interesting -- I wouldn't have thought that. I'll take a look.

Thanks,
