E mail notification?

kevs

Just wondering, have to ask, I was using for Dreamweaver a newsgroup forum
just like this, and I inadvertently discovered that this forum was also web
based, which I knew, but is was slow and had no notification.

Now it has notification.

So nothing personal, but does anyone know if there is a web based version of
these Microsoft newsgroups, such as this on the Web? Thanks!

Not that I know of.

The regular XL groups (a few of them, at least) have a portal at
ExcelForum.com. If you can stand the advertising and slow performance,
it provides notification for registered users.

Looks like good forum, but I can't imagine any place with better people
(such as you) and others than this place.

Only drag, is that you throw up a post, get your answer, and then move on.
But sometimes, someone comes on board the thread and adds useful
information. But I don't know about it, because I've moved on -- and there
is no notification. I think it would be nice if there was a web based
version of this newsgroup or at least a newly invented feature of
notification. Same situation for Word and Entourage newsgroups?

Thanks for the kind words. You'd find that there are other wonderful
people on the regular XL groups, too (about 75% of my posts are on them).

It's not notification, but you can set up a rule or custom view in
Entourage that highlights (or shows only) your messages and any replies:

http://google.com/groups?threadm=BAA668D6.4C54A%[email protected]

You'd still have to check in on the groups, but it would flag any
replies, even if they're weeks or months later.

Other newsreaders have similar capabilities.

When you say regular groups, do you mean that one just mentioned
excelforum.com? If yes, what other web based forums do you recommend for
Excel,Word, and Entourage?

I am going to study that thing about the rules and report back...but:

Thanks for the Mactopia page listing way to do this with a browser. But
before I get going with that (it's with Google groups) do you know if it
offers e mail notification?

Kind of wish it was Yahoo Groups as I'm so used to their interface for
groups, but come to think of it, with Yahoo groups, you get a daily digest
if you want, but I don't think it has e mail notification .

No, I don't recommend *any* web based interfaces. In fact, I hate them.
Compared to a dedicated newsreader, they're slow and have very few if
any filtering capability. I use MT-Newswatcher, and have used Entourage,
as well as a few other packages over the last 20 years.

The "regular groups" I mentioned were the microsoft.public.excel*
hierarchy (as opposed to the microsoft.public.mac* hierarchy). I read
and post mostly in these groups (some of which can be accessed via
ExcelForum), but there are others:

microsoft.public.excel.newusers, microsoft.public.excel,
microsoft.public.excel.misc, microsoft.public.excel.worksheet.functions,
microsoft.public.excel.programming, microsoft.public.excel.charting,
microsoft.public.excel.links, microsoft.public.excel.templates

Hi Kevs,

I'm not quite sure what events you want to be notified by email about.

It might be easier to configure an application like Entourage 2004 or some
other one that has rules. The app can simply flag postings of interest or
send an email to you or even set off your pager if you want.

It doesn't appear to me that Google offers email notification of postings.

Thanks Jim:
I have Entourage X, and will be getting 2004 in next few weeks.

Could you Pppppplease walk me clearly and slowly how to set up how Entourage
would either notify me when I check out the
microsoft.public.mac.office.excel site or send me an e mail when someone
responds to my post.

What I currently do is do a search for subject for a few days and then I
don't visit it later.

I looked at Diane's thing about custom views, but could not understand it.
There was a link there that was broken : 411. Thanks!!!!

I gave you a link to a post that explains how to set this up in a
previous reply. If you can't find it, check out Google, entering your
own email address as Author:

I saw that thread with Diane. It did not sound like a notification. It
sounded like more hassle than what I do now, which is use the subject
filter each and every time. In any, I'm not sure, it was not written in the
simply lucid laymen's style that you do so well, so I could not follow it.
