E-mail Sending problems

Alfred Kaufmann

Every so often our computer that runs Window XP Pro and Office 2003 has
problems when it comes to sending out e-mail - it just stays in the out box
no matter how many times you tell it to send. If you wait long enough you
may get a note saying it can't connect to the Internet. Strange because it
has no problem bringing e-mail in from the Internet. The computer is
connected to the Internet via a wireless connection. A re-boot usually
solves the problem but when you need to do that several times, something
needs to be fixed.

Where do I start first? We run Norton anti-virus and it is up to date and
tells us everything is good. We also run Network Magic and that seems to be
fine too, two laptops that connect the same way we do to the same router
have not reported any e-mail problems. Should I consider upgrading to
Office 2007? I would like to upgrade to Vista Business or Ultimate but we
need wait for other programs to be updated and that will not happen until
2008.

Suggestions to get this e-mail working properly would be appreciated, thanks

Upgradeing is not the way to fix a problem unless you know specifically that
it will.
Presumably you tested your connection with eg IE when it stated none?
You could initially try reconfiguring Norton to not scan email, allthough
you may have to uninstall Norton for this to properly take effect

I have had this trouble myself and have narrowed it down to the anti-virus
program. It happens with Norton and McAffee. The only fix I have come up with
is to Turn Off Outgoing Email Scanning in either program. It seems to do the
trick. Plus you sometimes have to delete all your messages in your Out Box.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the suggestion, I will turn off outgoing e-mail scanning and if
that does not work uninstall the thing. If it were up to me I would remove
the anti-virus program permanently but too many people have access to that
system and GET THIS they don't want to set up separate users and passwords.
Yeah, bring in the kids and let them, fool around, adjust the corporate
payroll and more... :-( then they tell me the system has problems.

Sorry all, just venting a bit.

Actually, incoming and outgoing mail scanning is useless and a problem for sending/receiving. Any virus that comes in with email is caught by your real-time on-access scanner anyway. If you think scanning outgoing mail for viruses is a good idea, you are about 3 steps too late in the prevention game.

Email scanning is a new marketing ruse by the AV companies that try to scare potential customers into buying something that will only cause problems. Read the archives of the Outlook group to see what kinds of problems this type of software scam causes.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. All
unsolicited mail sent to my personal account will be deleted without
reading.

On some systems disabling the Norton integration of email will not work. You will then need to uninstall the Norton completely using their uninstall tool available on the Symantec site. Do not try to use their uninstall button since it will not work, Use their uninstall toll as I mentioned.
Then when uninstalled re-install Norton MINUS the email integration(email scanning) You will still be protected with the resident Norton AV.
