E-mail Settings (POP3)

My POP3 E-mail settings change every time I close Outlook 2003. In
particular, the "Incoming mail server (POP3):" changes from "mail.ipls.com"
to "localhost" and "/mail.ipls.com" is appended to my User Name. I have to
reset these settings before I can use this e-mail account.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do so that these changes don't
happen every time I close and reopen Outlook?

Sounds like you've got a virus scanning program that scans incoming mail.
It's the thing that's probably changing those settings.

I only use Trend Micro's OfficeScan. Is there something I can do so that my
settings don't get changed? Why/how does it change the settings?

Are you on a company network? It is possible there are some restrictions,
policies set to prevent storing changes to outlook.

are selecting "Exchange server" instead of "POP3" account.

I am on a company network however they are as baffled as me as to the cause
(and remedy) of this issue. They have not put in place any
restrictions/policies which prevent storing changes to outlook. In fact, I
have Administrator level settings.

I have not selected "Exchange server" instead of "POP3" for my account
setup. In fact, in addition to this POP3 account, I also have an exchange
server account through my company network which is set as my default email
account.

At least you have yours working peter i cant even get my account set up!

I dont understand the pop3 and smtp thing at all! I know that pop3 is
outgoing and smtp is incoming or is it the other way around? anyway if my isp
is bt broadband and my email is yahoo - what should i be typing to set my
account up?

What you can do is disable the scanning of incoming mail. OfficeScan is
inserting itself as a proxy between Outlook and your mail server, modifying
the Outlook settings as it chooses and thereby disrupting your mail.

Hi Peter,

We have came across problems like this before this was caused by the local
profile being curupt and therfore not having the correct permistion, i would
delete the local profile then rebuild and i hope this will do the trick.
