Probably its just a multiple windows view

To "re-instate" back to single window:
Click Window > Arrange > Tiled (say) > OK
Close all windows (one-by-one) except one window
by clicking its red "x" at the top RH corner
Then maximize the remaining window
Save the file. Done.

P/s: You should never leave your message area blank

Hi,

You're screen could be split - choose Window, Remove Split.

Or it could be multiple windows added by choosing Window, New Window. In
that case look at the bottom of the Window menu and see if you see something
like Book1:2 and Book1:1. If so close one of the windows (files). You
won't be asked to save, because the workbook is still open.

Or
Technically you could have two instances of Excel open with the same
spreadsheet in both.
