Earthlink upload

I posted this earlier this evening but have not seen it yet. I am planning
to upload my web site from its test location at Netfirms to our permanent
host's web space at earthlink. I have been on LiveChat with an earthlink
tech this afternoon with increasing frustration. I explained that the upload
had to be http and why. I quoted David Bartosik's explicit instructions
about http vs. ftp and why. It was like talking to a rubber ball. The
response was, and I quote: http protocol is used only to access web sites,
not for uploading. Uploading must be done in ftp. He suggested calling
their 1-800 number, but before I subjected myself to some very kind, helpful
people who are to me almost impossible to understand, I thought I would give
the Publisher gurus a shot at it. Is it possible that Earthlink does not
support http uploads?

It is possible for a web host to not support http uploading, but that means
they don't support FrontPage and Microsoft technologies. Keep that in mind
if shopping for a web host, make sure they state support for FrontPage.
Your experience is typical I'm afraid, I do in fact touch on host support
ignorance in my troubleshooting article at
http://msmvps.com/blogs/dbartosik/articles/80560.aspx , very first
paragraph.
Most hosts use Apache servers and some flavor of UNIX because they are cheap
cheap cheap, versus Windows Server and Microsoft technologies, along with
that they are typically in the dark if you need some help with using
Microsoft technologies.
An irony of that, is that the host I have used for years and recommend to
all my clients and peers - www.webhost4life.com - is a Microsoft technology
web host and yet their prices normally beat the guys using the cheap and/or
free technologies. And I never talk to a rubber ball.

You will see my paean to you and the other helpers on this newsgroup before
you read this one. Thanks for everything. Interesting thing that perhaps
you can explain for me. After I uploaded the new pages I looked at the
hidden web page to confirm that FPSE were still in place. I got a "web site
cannot be found" message. Uh, oh, I said. But a few minutes later I checked
again and got the confirmation page. Then I decided to use my Firefox
browser to see if I could access the site. Lo and behold I got the old web
pages, not the new ones. I'm assuming the old site is still on the server
and FireFox goes there when it can't access the new site. But then what do I
know.
