Easiest way to remove duplicate items or compare lists

I have recently purchased the assets of a failing company. Now I have a
bunch of customer lists in several different varieties. Most of the lists
are in paper format some customers are in the database as well. I am
considering using excel to sort out what customers were duplicated the
lists. What's the best way to get the duplicates sorted through, Apple
script or Macro's? Are there examples laying around anywhere?
