Easily adding in-text comments in different color, font?

Heath

How can I easily add comments in the body of the text (asides: "put
example here," etc) without using the "comments" function? I really
just want to insert a text note, perhaps in brackets, perhaps in
another font style and color, that is easily noticed and as easily
removed, without fiddling about with the formatting palette or
selecting a new style every time I add a note. Is there a way to do
this?

Thanks, Heath

Hi Heath,

as far as I know, this isn't possible. But then again, there are so many
different useful methods available in Word which you do not want to use; I
was going to suggest using styles for this, as this is the easiest and most
convenient way of inserting consistently formatted text, but you don't seem
to want to use these, either. Are you aware of the fact that you can assign
keyboard shortcuts to styles, meaning that you can quickly apply a style
without your hands ever leaving the keyboard?

I suppose you could simply add your comments in caps, as capitalised text is
easily recognisable and does not require additional manual formatting or the
use of styles. One other method would be to insert text boxes, but I don't
think that's worth the effort, as it would make the entire process of
commenting only more cumbersome.

Then I would create a new style and assign keyboard shortcut. Everytime you
then want to use this styl you will hit your shortcut...
How does thet sounds?

I didn't know that you could assign keyboard shortcuts to styles - that
sounds like exactly what I'd like to do. How do I go about doing that?
(I'm not very good at styles, though I've read "Bend Word to Your
Will."

Thanks!

Create a style, then go to Tools>Customise>Customise Keyboard. In the list
on the left side of the window, scroll down until you see Styles. In the
list on the right side, select your style, then define a keyboard shortcut
in the text field below.

If this is a matter of regenerating new editions of the same document type
for users to complete, it sounds to me like you're a prime candidate for
creating a Template to base the new documents on. The template would include
MACROBUTTON fields and other controls as 'placeholders' containing exactly
the type of instruction you mentioned in your first post.

I think the styles/keyboard shortcut thing is exactly what I need -
CyberTaz, I'm just trying to put in comments in places that need
revision or something added - functioning just like a comment bubble,
but in-text.

Thanks for all your help, everyone! This group is always so helpful!

Seeing you have a copy of "Bend Word to Your Will", take a look at the
article under this heading -- "Comment" feature, a simple substitute for.

It covers in detail a method of inserting blue (or whatever colour you
choose) comments either as an in-sentence comment or a separate paragraph.

Using AutoCorrect to produce arrows to show which item you're referring to
is under "Examples of AutoCorrect items I've assigned".

It's all done by keyboard shortcut. I use it many times every day: select
the comment, key Command-Shift-s -> ct -> [Return].

See also Appendix G: Automating standard comments via AutoText items on a
toolbar.

Got it taped now - and I'm going to go peruse the rest of the 2004
BWTYW! (I had the one that was mostly based on W2001.) Thanks!
