easy query, I think

I am using WORD 97. I know with WORKS if I choose the Save As option and the
file already exists, I am asked if I want to replace that file. However,
with WORD, it doesn't ask; it just replaces that file. I can't seem to find
an option that will make WORD ask me if I want to save it using the Save As
option. Surely, there must be such an option. How can I do it?

Save As should always ask. You might try re-adding that menu command back to
the menu.

The save as command is listed, but it just doesn't act right; it acts
identical to the save command.

But, then, if I make changes and use SAVE AS again, it will not ask it will
just replace the file.

Is this the way it is supposed to be??

What if I wanted the previous version? Is it there somewhere?

Hi Mel,

If you use SaveAs to save a document with the same name as it has already
been saved under, you will not be asked if you want to replace the previous
version. If you want to save a copy of the most recently saved version,
check the "Always create backup copy" box under the "Save Options" section
of the Save dialog under Tools>Options.

Note that only creates a copy of the most recently saved version. It does
NOT create copies of each saved version. If you want to do that, you will
need to use the Versions facility available on the File menu for that
purpose.

You should see the Save As dialog, and then the file will be replaced if you
click OK without changing the name.

Do you mean that when you click SAVE AS Word instantly saves the document
without displaying any dialog box asking you to choose the file name/type?

This bug is seen if Word is not closed properly and then a new Word process
is started. Open the Task Manager (click ctrl-alt-delete then click Task
Manager). On the Processes tab you should see only one instance of
WinWord.exe listed, no matter how many Word documents you have open. If you
see WinWord.exe listed twice or more then it will confirm what I have
said...Word didn't close properly and was then started again. You should
close each Word document you have open, then return to the Task Manager and
kill the errant WinWord.exe process. Then reopen your Word doc and you
should be able to Save As...

I forgot to add something...

Before checking this, close down Outlook if you use Word as your email
editor and any other programs in which you might be running an OLE instance
of Word. (Typically MS Office programs.)
