EASY Way To Set Tabbing Order On Form Controls

J

I've seen it said on many forums that it is not possible to change the
tabbing order for form controls. I think I've even seen a Microsoft
document which says you must recreate the form to change the order.
This is NOT true.

You CAN reset the tabbing order for your form controls without creating
the form all over again.

Starting from the form control you want first, individually select and
bring each control to the top using the Bring-To-Front order function
(ALT-F6). The form controls will then tab in the order you brought
them to the front.

Easy!

I should add that I have seen a Microsoft support document which state
that the Bring To Front (ALT F6) and Send To Back (ALT SHIFT F6
shortcuts do not work under Windows 98 and Windows Me. In thi
situation, you will have to use the menus directly (Arrange/Order) o
create your own toolbar with the functions

I have not yet had time to verify this.
Once I've tested it I'd document it.

David,

The Publisher FAQ page a
http://www.publishermvps.com/Default.aspx?tabid=30 is one source of th
common misinformation about setting form control tabbing order. It'
awful to think about how many people have spent so many hours entirel
recreating a form page because they haven't found the righ
information. I did a search on this problem and many sources give th
same wrong information.

I notice you link to the FAQ page a lot. Do you manage, or do you hav
any influence over whoever maintains the page? It would be a grea
service to those with the specific issue if they could find the righ
advice

I've had this problem for the longest time and haven't had the time t
look into solutions.

I just tried this and it seems to work just fine.

Thanks for posting this

I do so as time allows. I'm not as worried about this topic as you
seem to be but I do intend to address the matter when my schedule
permits.

http://www.publishermvps.com/Default.aspx?tabid=30 is still providing
false information about setting tabbing order.

I know, you're busy. But think of all the effort you could save
someone.

Nag, nag, nag.

I'm bumping this thread because I feel it's wasting the time of too many
people to follow the directions on a certain MVP's website (and
others!)to manually recreate an entire page when a few seconds of work
will do the same thing.

Hi, I tried this and it didn't work for me. I tried using the shortcut,
the toolbar and the menu option. None of them worked. I have Windows 98
and Publisher 2000. Any thoughts as to why and what else I can try?
Thank you.

From David Bartosik's
http://www.publishermvps.com/WebDesign/FAQ/tabid/30/Default.aspx

Q. The form controls on my form "tab" in a random order. Can the tab order
be specified?
A. By default Publisher sets the tab order in the order in which the
controls are added to the page. The Arrange (front/back) feature can be used
to set an explicit tab order in a form. This is done by selecting each
control in the order you want the tab order to follow, and setting it to
"bring to front". In v2003 you can right click the control and select Order,
Bring to front. In v2002 you can use Alt + F6. Or just use the Arrange menu.

So, if the short cuts doesn't work for you, build a new form in the proper
order.
