Edit>fill>justify?

In the column 1 row 1 cell of my doc I have 2 words that I want to Œjustify¹
or split between 2 columns. I thought if I selected my 2 words in cell 1 of
column 1, row 1 and then went edit>fill>justify it would automatically split
the words into columns. But it doesn¹t. What have I missed? Thanks.

Edit/Fill/Justfy will split your text into rows with the number of
words per row dependent on the width of your column. To see this,
select A1&A2 with column A just wide enough for the longest word,
then choose Edit/Fill/Justify.

I can't tell if you want to keep the words in one column or actually
separate them into 2.

If one (note that this will not really split the words between
columns unless the words are of equal length, including
proportionality of the font):

Merge cells A1 & B1 and center the text by:

a) selecting A1 & B1, then Format/Cells/Alignment and check the
merge checkbox, and setting the horizontal alignment to Center,

or

b) Checking the merge cells in the Text Alignment section of the
Formatting Palette, and clicking the Align Center button in that
same section.

If instead you really want to split them into two columns:

select A1, and choose Data/Text to Columns... select the Delimited
radio button, click Next and check the Space checkbox (or just
select the fixed radio button and click next - XL will by default
split at the space). Click Next, then Finish. Align A1 to the right
and B1 to the left if desired.
