Martin,

MS Project Standard and MS Project Professional can both open/edit mpp files. If they came with your project server software then they should work just fine, although I don't remember them packaged that way.

You must have MS Project Standard or Professional installed on your local
computer to view or edit mpp files from Project Web Access. There are third
party mpp viewers available to view mpp files without having Project
installed. The fact that MS does not provide an mpp viewer (at the very
least with the purchase of Project Server) is absurd. I create pdf files
with snapshots of the Project Gannts and link them to the projects as a
partial workaround.

James:

Project Server is a Project Viewer. Project Server also eliminates mpp files
as a mainstay, so I'm confused why you think an mpp viewer should come with
Project Server.

Martin:

As Earl noted, Project Server is not packaged with Project Clients. You may
be mistaking Client Access Licenses, aka CALs, with Project Professional
licenses. The 5 web CALs that come with Project Server are licenses for
users who access the Web interface and do not have Project Professional.
Only your Project Managers and Administrators need to have Project Pro
licenses. Everyone else who logs on to the Web interface must be licensed
with the much less expensive CAL. Also, you must buy Project Professional,
not Project Standard.

Gary,

In the majority of production jobs my company runs there are many separate
production jobs that are associated with a given project. It is helpful for
our project managers to be able to drill down to these jobs and view them as
linked mpp Gannt chart documents. Inserting them as sub projects doesn't
work for us because we usually don't want them affecting the project time
line yet. They're there for informational purposes only. Right now we just
create pdf files from the mpp files to allow the users to view the gannts in
their browser. It would be very useful and more time efficient if there were
a viewer to accomplish this an provide some minimal mpp functionality similar
to some of the third party viewers. If MS provides a better way to deal with
this please reply. Thanks for the feedback.

Are you saying that you don't save these to Project Server? Why not?
