Edit Picture Not Available - Why?

Greetings,

Word 2003, XP Professional.

I was given a Word file containing black and white images. I need to convert
this doc to PDF. I want to edit the images in the doc. But, when I select an
image, "edit picture" is grayed out in the right-click menu.

I have tried to copy and paste these images into paint and Photoshop, but
the images don't look right. Also, when I have turned the doc into a PDF and
then "export images", agiven image is exported as 30 or so files, each just
a horizontal strip of the image.

What is going on here?

Any help would be appreciated.
