Editable resource availability view

Hello,

we're new to Project 2007 and just figuring out how to work with it. I've
played a bit with the leveling options and I like how they work, but I'm not
yet sure how to cope with this while having simultanous projects running for
a single resource.

What I would like is a Gantt chart view of all enrolled projects for a
single resource in which I can move tasks along the planning. I know I can
import multiple projects into one, but that would require me to keep track of
the projects a resource is working on, which can lead to mistakes. In the
Projects portal site, I can select a resource and view it's availability.
This is exactly the view I want (all tasks for a resource visibile, grouped
by project), but that's readonly unfortunately. I'm looking for the same kind
of view but one I can use to drag tasks forward or backward in time with
respect to the inter-project levelling of the tasks.

Does such a thing exist or is my approach all wrong?

I sympathize with your needs here! In reality the solution has to involve
processes for assigning resource availability to individual projects. It is
then the PM's responsibility to level Resource workloads to match the
availabilities they have been given. Unfortunately you can't set the
Resource availability for one Resource in one project, only for each
Resource across all projects. This is the biggest hole in functionality for
me.

You need your management to priorities projects and then assign resources as
required to meet corporate goals. Good luck!

Hi Rod,

thanks for the reply. A little disappointing that this isn't included in the
featureset, but hey; can't have them all!

As for my question; do you know if such a view (all projects for a single
resource, editable) is available somewhere? Because now I would have to open
each individual project to move tasks and with a couple of simultaneous
projects that would become kind of a hassle with overlap between tasks. I'm
afraid that moving a task in project A would require me to first free up the
time in project B, which involves moving a task in project C and so on. The
best case scenario would be moving a task in project A (mostly to be done
earlier then expected I guess) and Project moving along the tasks of projects
B and C to prevent overlap for the resource. But since tasks could be linked
to other tasks for other resources, I understand the complexity of this
action.
