Editing a datasource question

I just need to verify some information I received regarding mailmerge and
networked drive. I was told due to security, you could no longer edit and
save changes to source documents on networked drives to ensure that multiple
users were not making changes to the same document at the same time. I was
told you have to edit the source document directly instead. I can save
changes when I edit a source doucment which is .XLS but not when my source
document is DOCX or DOC. BTW, I am using Word 2007, however I have no
problems when I do this in Word 2003.

Thanks a lot,

Hi Nat,

Can you be more specific on the steps you're using when you say you can edit a data source in Word 2003 vs Word 2007? Word doesn't
usually allow editing to any of its documents by more than one person, but different rules can apply to attached, non-Word document
data files.

Thanks for the reply Bob. I will try and be more specific this time.
1. I open the merge document, and if it is linked to the correct source
document, I choose YES at the dialog box, however if I want to choose a
different source document I select NO and manually set up a new merge.
2.If it is a manual setup, I go to the MAILING tab on the ribbon and select
Select Recipients>Use Existing List and then I browse to the new data
document.
3. From here, I select Edit Recipient list.
4. In the MAIL MERGE RECIPIENT window, I highlight the datasource and click
on the Edit button.
5. From here, I can modify some of the data fields until I am done making my
changes. Then I hit Close.
6. Now I hit OK to close the MAIL MERGE RECIPEINT window.
7. When I close the word merge document I get the following message (or
something similar) DCF5FOEB.docx is a mailmerge document that is attached to
a datasource FTGdata.docx that has not been saved. Do you want to save
FTGdata.docx now?
8. If I choose Yes, I get "the file is read-only (FTGdata.docx)

If I do this procedure on my C drive instead of a Network drive, I have no
such issues. If I do this in 2003, then it does not matter where the merge
and source documents reside.

Hope that makes more sense.

Thanks again.
