Editing a horizontal line while holding shift to constrain it

In office 2007, if I have drawn a horizintal line segment, using the shift
key to constrain the line, I have no problems, However, if I wish to edit
the length of this line segment by dragging one endpoint, while holding the
shift key to keep it constrained to being horizontal, 90% of the time the
line extends infinitely in one direction off the edge of the monitor. This
only happens in Word 2007.

I have performed this edit successfully in every other version of word
thousands of times.

Any thoughts? I have reloaded the program and installed all updates to no
avail.

If a line has been drawn as straight to begin with, you don't need to press
Shift when you resize it. But I find that if I release Shift before
releasing the mouse button, the line ends where the mouse is even though
while I'm drawing it, it appears to shoot off the page. You can also change
the size in the Format AutoShape dialog.
