editing a users name

..We are using 2007 with latest updates applied. I have a problem changing a
Users name to adjust for marriage, other name change, error, etc. When I try
to edit the nme in Resource center or in Pro I get: "Can't Save, The resource
name is already in use. You must select a unique name for the resource". I
do not want to delete and reinsert as the resource as there are current and
historical tasks involved. Is there a way to edit names without deleting the
old. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

you should be able to amend the resource name within the add user screen.
having said this, there is no reason why you cant amend information within
the global resource sheet. Make sure that you select the resource in the
resource center, click the MS project icon to open the global resource sheet,
amend the exisiting resource and click save. this usually does the job
Hope this helps

I tried it exactly as instructed below and got this error message when I
clicked Save for both methods.
"Resource Name Already in Use"
In this instance I was just trying to capitalize the first letter of the
resource's last name. Same letterjust making it a capital. I get the same
error message when I try to change the last name completely to a new name for
another resource. We are using Windows Authentication.

Have you also tried to change the name under the "Add user" under server
settings?
Thanks

I've tried in Server Settings/Manage Users/Select a User. Then edit the name
and hit Save. I get an error message. I've opened the Ent. Resource Pool in
Pro, selected the resource, editted the name and tried to Save. I get the
same error message. I've tried setting the User to Inactive, no luck. I've
tried it with several names just to be sure.
As no one else has chimed in with a comment I have to believe this condition
is not common behaviour. Is it possible this is an interaction with the
Sharepoint portal sign on? The Display Name shouldn't affect the Portal.

It turns out the problem was in the Sharepoint portal signin to AD
relationship but we've found a workaround. We were able to inactivate the
User in both the Sharepoint site and as a Project User. make the change to
the Display Name and reactivate. It worked.
