The chart produced in Excel just has too much white space around it. Is
there a way of making the box smaller without scaling down images and
text? (I'm copying and pasting the chart into a Word document.)

Thanks

You can sometimes select the plot area and drag it larger to improve the
situation. But, it may not give you the total control you want, but it may
help.

On the charts I'm using (3D pies) that has the effect of 'exploding' the
segments. The more you move it, the greater the 'explosion' but at the
expense of the size of each segment. Actually quite useful to know but
not what I need to do! Thanks though.

Although you can't just stretch the Pie, here are a few thoughts that
may be useful:

1- If you are using a Legend, fromat the text to as small a font as
possible... smaller space required for Legend allows Pie to expand,

2- Better yet, do without a Legend altogether and use Chart>Chart
Options>Data Labels to identify the slices, and

3- With 3D Pies, go to Chart>3D View to modify the Elevation settings &
maybe Height % of Base.

PS-

Correction- In Excel, if you click close to the Pie, but not directly
on it you can use the bounding box that shows up to stretch the Pie,
itself. This may vary depending on Excel version, but you have to do it
in Excel before you copy & paste into Word.

If you are simply looking to get text in Word to flow closer to the
Pie, select the chart and and use the Text Wrapping settings on the
Picture Toolbar to control tex flow.

(You might want to consider using Word's Isert>Object command to insert
the chart into the document as an embedded or linked object.)

Jeremy, Are you sure you are grabbing the plot area? Make sure it says Plot
area in the formula bar. For me this expands the size without changing the
"explosion" in 3d pie charts.
