EDITING clip art

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

In my 1997-2000 version of Word on my Mac, I could insert clip art, then float the cursor over it and press control and get a drop down menu that would allow me to select GROUP, UNGROUP, or REGROUP. In my 10.5.1 version of Word, the dropdown menu has those options dimmed. How do I go about activating them so I can use them. I'm frustrated!

Hi Barbara -

Despite its greater sophistication the graphics engine in Office 2008
doesn't support that editing feature. I'm afraid you'll have to use some
sort of graphics program if you want to modify artwork. There are a number
of them available - commercial as well as share/freeware. Try Google or

Thanks. I've tried saving the wmf as a pdf to my desktop and opening it in Illustrator. I could indeed make all the changes I wanted. However, now: I saved it as a jpg, because I could not have the option to save it as a wmf, but the jpg is rasterized so it is fuzzy when I open it in a Word document. How should I save it after manipulating it in Illustrator, so that it is still a vector image for use in my Word file?

Why did you "not have the option" to save something other than JPEG? In Illy
CS3, File> Export [not Save As] provides WMF, EMF, PNG, etc. but those
formats aren't "new" to that version. You could also output it as a PDF.

It isn't clear which version of Office you're actually using - 10.5.1 is the
version of OS X. If you're at 12.1.2 I'd stay away from PDF at the moment if
you intend to save the Word doc in the 97-2004 (.doc format). The 12.1.2
update introduced a bug that causes Office apps to crash if you do. As long
as you're saving in .docx PDF would probably be the better choice.

Word will use WMF, EMF and EPS vectors.

But going out of Illustrator, you have to do a bit of fiddling to get it to
save in the generic compatible format, not the Illustrator "fiddled" format
:)

I do not use Illustrator so I cannot really guide you, except to say that
Word likes a placeable header with its vector illustrations, and it would
prefer than these were in TIFF or WMF. Note: "EPS" and NOT "AI" pretending
to be EPS :)

I use CorelDRAW, which will do WMF headers. I always use those in EPS
because the result will then print from any printer, whether it has a
PostScript interpreter or not.

Oh: Do not go about 24-bit colour (RGB) or Word will play up.

Hope this helps
