Editing duration of split sub tasks

J

I know I can use multiple tasks and lag times but in this instances, I think
the split task is more appropriate but gives me hard time for editing it.

I have a task for Visiting potential customers during a project. Each visit
will be 3 days and over the project duration (14 months) there will be 14
visits, one per month. I don't want to create an activity with 14 subtasks,
it will clutter my gantt. So I splitted the task 13 times trying to leave 3
days per sub-split-task. Problem is that it's not very precise using the
mouse.

Is there a way to go back and edit the duration of all those sub-split-task
?

Thanks

Hello Junkyard Engineer,

The most accurate way is to use the Task Usage view and manually edit
the work for the assignment. By entering work values and zeros in the
assignment row, you can split the task.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hi !

Going into the task usage view, I only get cost related data even going into
customize view. I finally zoomed on the task bars to the point I can
manually resize splitted subtasks with the mouse. But I find it odd that
there is no way to edit such information.

Thanks for your help !

Thanks !

Yes I've tried that and I didn't want to clutter my gantt chart with so much
subtasks details. That's why the split task in this instance was what I
thought a good approach. As I said to Julie, I finally zoomed on the task to
the day level and resized it with the mouse manually for each occurence of
the split. Too bad there's no way to edit that type of split information
easily.

Thanks again for your input !

Record a macro of you splitting the task. Then you can edit the detail
to give whatever precision you like.

Copy and paste rows to give additional splits.

This is barely more work than typing in dates.

But you end up with only one summary line - where's the clutter?

Hi Junkyard Engineer,

You're very welcome for the assistance and thanks for the feedback.

You can turn on the display of work to edit the information in the
Task Usage view. In the Task Usage view, choose Format > Details and
select work.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

It's probably an old boy habit ;) The reason is when I click on Expand All,
if I have a lot of those recuring tasks, I have to go back in the schedule
and recess them back manually which is not a big deal but it annoys me. But
I recognize that you are entirely right :)

Oh ! This is interesting and certainly more precise and "ligit"

Thanks so much.

You're most welcome Jack-Eric (much better moniker than Junkyard
Engineer) and thanks for the feedback.
