Editing formula -all I get is formula

Greetings
I'm using excel 2003. I have a list of formulas I created from writing
the first then copying down the line. When I edit any one of them the
return is the formula itself not the result. I've reviewed other
messages in this forum and tried to implement "copy - paste special –
add" from blank cell as well as "change all to general format from
text format" but to no avail. I need either more explicit instruction
or an alternate solution. I never had this problem with previous
versions.
Thanks for your help
