editing frustrations in pulication view( HELP!)

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel What im trying to do is design a template where every single page has the same layout, so i can just go through and fill out the info in the appropriate places. In publication view, under master page, i got it all set up. When I go back to what i considered was regular view to start filling in what i need i face a few troubles. For one the header foot window thing shows up and wont go away unless i click the X, but then that grays EVERYTHING out and I cannot work on my document. so i click around to make it pop back up, and i ignore as I start working on the first page. But when i insert a second page, it contains all the information I just entered on the previous page. Erasing it from there just erases it from the first page. I am no longer in publication view when making these changes! Why is it acting like I am editing the master page???!1

Because you are :)

A "Master Page" is, in fact, the header of that section of the document. It
is not a "separate page", it's the header of the current page.

You may be better off storing what you want as a Document Part, but that
mechanism is not exposed in Mac Word, you would need to use Word 2007 if you
wanted to do that.

I expect Document Parts will re-appear in Word 2010 on the Mac.

Cheers

Thank you for the reply but that still doesnt help me out really. I thought that the master page was what would appear on every page and once i got it setup I could work on my document as normal- everypage being setup exactly the same. How do I get out of master page edit mode? I though I was doing that by going to print layout view.

First & Foremost: Word's Publishing Layout View is *not* the equivalent of a
desktop publishing program... Regardless of how much the MS marketing
department would like us to believe it is. You're still dealing with Word's
flow-based structure "under the hood", in which there are no 'pages'. The
"Master Pages" are actually just a visualization of Headers & Footers.

The net result is that there is a Master Page for each page of your
document. If you don't make any change to the Master for page B it will use
the same master as page A. If you do change the master for page B it will be
used for page C unless you change page C's master *after* it has been
created... And so on throughout the document (aka: running header/footer).

If you modify a Master Page Word changes the type of Section Break that
created it. That's the equivalent of removing the "Link to Previous" check
for Headers & Footers and specifying L/R Facing Pages. You cannot base a new
page on a pre-existing master of your choice such as you can in InDesign,
PageMaker, QuarkXPress... Even MS Publisher on the PC.

IMHO, Publishing Layout View is a superficial feature which does a
reasonably nice job for someone with very simple needs and/or has little
understanding of or concern for how the program works. For anything beyond
that a true page layout program -- even a cheap one -- is the way to go. It
is, in fact, just another *view* of the Word document, however.

ok thank you for that reply. So are you saying I cant do what i thought master pge would let me do? For example I wanted master page to simply contain a few text boxes which would appear on every page, so that each page i could quickly put in the approriate information for each box. So you are saying that I cannot do that? I know there is a way to do that, theres gotta be!

Yes, that's what he is saying.

Yes, there is a way to do what you want, but Master Pages is NOT that way:
it will NOT do what you want.

In the Word Help, look for the topic "Have Word complete your typing"

That gives you a basic description of how to use AutoText, and it is
AutoText that you need to use for this, not Master Pages.

Hope this helps
