editing headers

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Intel My business partner sent me a word document (he's on vista, office) and I can not find a way to edit the header. I know it's there because it prints correctly, but I need to edit some of the text. I'm a new mac user, so I'm sure this is relevant, but here's what I do see {EMBED Word.Document.12}. When I double click on the header, I see two blue icons, header and close, but I can't find the header to edit.

thank you in advance for any help.

Right-click "EMBED" and choose "Toggle Field Codes" so you can see what you
are doing (you are displaying the field code, the Header is actually the
document which is embedded).

Then you will be able to edit the content.

John - thank you so much for your advise. Unfortunately, I don't see the toggle choice when I "right-click" embed. I'm very new to the apple world, so I'm assuming "right-click" = control+ click? do i need to be in a certain view? I see "help, document object, save as picture, borders and shading"; there are other grayed choices, but no "toggle field codes".

Any idea what I'm doing incorrectly?

thanks again,
Jay

I'm not sure that YOU are doing anything wrong.

The word "EMBED" is a command that is part of a field code. It shows that
another file, in this case, a document, has been inserted into the document
at that point.

If it has, and you right-click it you should see an option to "Toggle Field
Codes". If you do toggle the field codes, the code will be replaced with
its result, which in this case will be your header.

If that's not happening, I think the document is broken, get yourself a new
copy...

Grab your old Microsoft Mouse and plug it in to your Mac ‹ it will 'just
work' and modern Macs are just as right-click enabled as Windows... Trying
to drive a modern Mac with a single-button mouse will drive you up the wall
in very short order. And the current crop of Apple rodents look very smart,
but they are a pain in the wrist to use (even though they DO have a
right-click on them...)

Cheers

Hey John;

Just in case you didn't realize it....

If using a laptop you don't even need to involve a mouse... At least I Snow
Leopard (and I believe Leopard). Just place two fingers on the touch pad
while you click.

Hi Bob:

Oh yes, on this MacBook, I realised it :)

However, I am notoriously fumble-fingered, so I prefer to use the MacBook
with a Microsoft Arc Mouse, and enable the "Ignore the touchpad when mouse
is present" setting, because otherwise I keep hitting the touchpad when I am
NOT clicking, which leads to a disconcertingly high number of "typing where
I didn't mean to" problems :)

Cheers
