Editing 'hidden' xml in word document

I need to edit a Word xml document. By using the word xml toolbox, I can
see xml that is 'hidden' inside w:t tags. I can even edit them if I open
the document in an xml editor but is there any way I can see and edit them
from within Word?

I've just realised that I was looking for something complex (non displaying
xml data) when in fact it was considerably easier. The data I was looking
for was simply normal text formatted as 'hidden'. Ho hum.
