Editing in Word 2002

Intermittently when I highlight a word or set of words in
either a document or a table in a Word 2002 document and
change the text (i.e. bold, color, font size, font type,
etc), the entire document changes to the selected
change. I have to then undo the change and it then only
changes the items selected.

Does anyone know how to turn this option off?

I don't know why it is intermittenly. It either should or shouldn't. See:

I don't know why it is intermittently.

Possibly because he is actually using different styles, only some of which
are set to automatically update?
