Editing Outlook Messages/Calendar Items

My Outlook frequently does not allow me to edit outlook messages or calendar
items and gives me an error saying something along the lines of cannot edit
message/calendar item because it is opened by another user. How can I stop
this?

You really haven't told us enough detail to help you. So I suggest you
either Google the EXACT error message and read the articles that relate to
your version, or come back and tell us:

version of Outlook
exact error you are getting
