editing symbols automatically occur in all word documents

After using the step by step mail merge every Word document I write and every
Word document I have filed incorporated the "symbols" I saw on Mail Merge -
little arrows, "q", dots, bullets, etc. These symbols do not print out when
the document is printed, but they are very distracting. How do I get rid of
these?
