Editing templates in Project Server 2003

I want to create project templates for each of the departments in my
company. However, I do not want the templates to be edited except by
some specific users. i.e Senior Project Manager of IT department can
edit the IT department's templates only, and Senior Project Manager of
Production department can edit the Production department's templates.
Any idea if this is possible? If yes, how do I do that? If not, what
are my alternatives?

There is no way within Project Server to allow specific users to edit
specific templates only. However, you can restrict WHO can edit and save
templates. Here's how:

1. Log into PWA with administrator permissions
2. Click Admin - Manage users and groups
3. Click the Groups link in the sidepane
4. Select the Project Managers group and click the Modify Group button
5. In the Global Permissions grid, set the "Save Project Template"
permission to Not Allowed (neither Allow or Deny are selected)
6. Click the Save Changes button

The above steps will prevent all of your project managers from saving an
enterprise project template.

7. Click the Portfolio Managers group and click the Modify Group button.
8. Add your Senior Manager from each department to this Group
9. Click the Save Changes button.

The last three steps will allow your Senior Managers to edit and save
enterprise project templates. Hope this helps.

Hello Dale,
Thanks for your reply. Actually, I have tried that. But my scenario is
such that, I do not want the senior manager of department A to edit
the project template of department B. Someone did give me a very
non-specific suggestion i.e using categories, but I have not been able
top figure it out. I have looked around PWA but it seems it cannot be
achieved. Now am thinking, since it seems impossible to have this
restriction, then at least how can I know who was the last person to
edit the project template?

Since you cannot set permissions so that a specific manager can only edit a
specific template, you will need to make this a training and performance
issue with your senior managers. Teach them which templates to edit and
then hold them accountable for this behavior. Hope this helps.
