editing text

I often change my mind and wish to add words to text already typed in a
document. Ordinarily, I can place my cursor in any text, begin typing and
have the new words inserted, while the original text is shifted to the right.
Lately, however, when I do this the new text is "typing over" the original
text and I'm losing the original text. This is causing me to have to re-type
a great deal. Please help me.

Have you got "Overtype mode" selected in Preferences » Edit?
Or have you have the preferences » view » Window » Status bar set for
showing that silly status bar at the bottom of your document window?
Do you see a little OVR with a green blob on it? Click it off.
