Editor Options in 2007 working intermittently

Under Editor Options | Proofing | AutoCorrect Options | AutoFormat As You
Type tab all 6 options under 'Replace text as you type' are selected but the
features are not working. Also under the 'AutoCorrect' tab all items are
selected except 'Capitalize first letter of sentences' but the items in the
table under that tab are not changing when I write an email message.

Examples: 5th does not become 5 with a superscript 'th'
does not become the smiling face symbol

These sorts of changes did function a few weeks ago.

I have looked at all the item under Tools | Options and all of the many
settings seem to remain as I had originally set them after installing Office
2007.

Any ideas?
