Editting animations

I expect this is old ground but I'm hoping for an answer to this common issue.

I have a complex slide with grouped objects and animation. I need to edit
one of the grouped objects and of course when you ungroup, the animation
effects are removed. Any workarounds that anyone knows about?

On a related note, some of the slides have objects that shrink, then move
when the animation is run. What I'd like to do is to edit the objects in
their final size / position but all I have figured out is trial and error
process of edit-run animation-see what's wrong-repeat until I finally get it.
Is there any way to edit objects in their completed animation state vs their
starting state?

As well as what Steve said - Do the shapes NEED to be grouped? For many (not
all) animations if you select several shapes and apply a custom animation
they will behave as if they were grouped.
