Effect and Affect

Grammar check in word does not appear to understand the difference between
the words effect and affect.

For example, "I would like you to effect a change to the word grammar check
function" is actually correct English - perhaps not in the USA where English
is different, however in UK English versions, this is entirely the case.

"The effect of this change was felt far and wide through the UK English
speaking community" - this is also correct English

"I was affected personally by this change, it made me less angry when the
paperclip help arrived."

"Therefore it is possible for the programmers at Microsoft to affect
directly the lives of many of their end-users"

You don't say what version of Word you're using, what language your
text is set for (English UK, I assume), or what behavior you are
seeing compared to what you expect. All of these are necessary in
order to understand your suggestion.

I copied the entire text of your post into Word 2003 and ran spelling
and grammar checks with both English US and English UK. (By the way,
the two dialects don't differ in their usage of affect and effect.)
The only item flagged in either case was the use of a comma instead of
a semicolon in "I was affected personally by this change, it made me
less angry when the paperclip help arrived." All of your
illustrations, which use affect and effect correctly, were accepted by
the grammar checker.
