Elective SharePoint Templates

Using Project Server 2003 I know that it is possible to create WSS templates
that can be designed with library structures and populated with Pro-Forma
documents and to then have Project Server use one of these customised
templates in-lieu of the default Project template.

Is it possible to configure Project Server so that more than one WSS
Template can be used and to have an option as to which one is used when
creating a new project?

I have been asked this by an organisation that is considering Project
Server. They employ different Project Methodologies such as PRINCE2 or
6SIGMA and would like to have WSS sites that comply with these methods
created from a WSS template at project inception

Hi Dominic,

I am not aware of any functionality in Project Server that will allow
you to do this automitically - the easiest way I can think of is to set
your Site Creation to be manual, which will tell Project Server not to
create any sites when a new project is published. Then the
administrator can manually select the correct template for the project,
and create the site manually from the Project Server 2003 admin pages.

The other option (if you are willing to spend some money) is to
investigate a workflow solution that will take you through the project
creation steps and that can be developed to create a project workspace
with a specific template based on which project it is. We have done
something similar with K2.net.

Dear Nico,

Your solution appears to be both neat and simple to implement, thanks very
much for the suggestion.

I don't have an Instance of Project Server 2003 in front of me @ the moment
but from memory assume that blocking automatic site creation should be a
reaonably straightforward Administrative action in Project Web Access.

I will let you know how I get on with this.

Hi Dominic,

My apologies - the option can be found at Admin --> Manage Windows
Sharepoint Services --> Site Provisioning Settings.

Under the option "Site Template" you can select the template to use,
and under "Settings For Web Site Creation" there is an option for you
to specify if site creation should be manual or automatic.

Dear Nico,

I really appreciate your further assistance - no apologies neccesary as I am
sure I would have worked out how to get to the setting pretty quickly given
how intuitive and straightforward aspects of Project Server Administration
is within Project Web Access. Thanks for the detailed steps anyhow.
