Elements gallery is ANNOYING

You can't.

Don't bother telling us how that makes you feel -- we've heard it a thousand
times before, and Microsoft won't read it in here :)

If you mean that the Gallery itself is displaying when you launch Word you
can go to Word>Preferences>Gallery & remove the check which is in place by
default: Open Elements Gallery when application opens.

OTOH, if you've discovered that and are referring to the 5 buttons
themselves, John is quite correct - they can't be turned off.

Should you ever come to find the tools somewhat useful, once you expand the
Gallery by clicking a button you can then double-click a button to collapse
it again when you're done.
