eliminate .doc suffix

My prior word saved my documents exactly as I typed the designation. EG:
When I typed Smith Letter, it saved as JUST that with no .doc following it.
That allwed me to hit "save as" for a revision and just add a 2. Now the
,doc appears and I cannot simply add 2 with out a long name. Is there any
way to eliminate the .doc from appearing? Thank you.

You may be referring to a feature of Windows, not Office.

For example: In Windows XP, open any Windows Explorer window and go to the
Tools menu, then select Folder Options. In the View tab you'll find a
check-off for 'Hide extensions for known file types'.

By the way, not that it's my business, you are much safer by leaving file
extensions exposed. Smith Letter 2.doc accomplishes your goal just as well.

Whether or not the file extension is displayed is set in your Operating
system, not Office. (See Control Panel, Folder Options, View)

Err yes you can.....just click in the box and move the cursor using the left
and right arrow keys and type your "2" where you want it. I do this all the
time...
