Eliminate need for CD

Some OEM installations of Office 2000 allow Office Updates to be applied
without having to dig up the CD. How is that done? Include data.msi file
on the hard drive? If so, where?

Depends on the OEM.

Hi MCP6453,

One method is to copy the CD to a folder on your
PC and then install from there. Office updates
(other than 'hot fix' items - those issued between
Service Packs) generally come in both a 'patch' version
and a 'file replacement' version. The patch version may
require the CD, the file replacement version may not,
but the MS Installer (MSI) that Office uses always expects
to have access to the original installation point and media,
be it a CD, CD image copy or a Network installation source.
MSI may detect a condition that needs correcting when updating
that might otherwise not require the CD and would then
ask for it before updating.

Office 2003 has a new feature, Local Install Source, that
caches the disk contents on your hard drive as part of
the install process to reduce the need for having the
CD available.
