It is more likely to be a non-printing space indicator. Does it disappear if
you click the ¶ button (CTRL+*).
If not, tell us the Word version.

You've probably got Formatting Marks for spaces switched on. To switch them
off, go to Tools - Options - View and untick the SPACES box under the heading
FORMATTING MARKS.
