Eliminate the $29.00 charge for replacing damaged FrontPage CD's

D

D. Rice

I don't have a question about MS FrontPage. I have been asked if I'd like to
submit a suggestion. Indeed, I do, as follows:

It's tacky, in poor taste, disloyal to the loyal MS customers and leaves the
appearance that MS is greedy, when MS requires $25.00 and more to replace a
legitimately purchased and accidentally damaged CD.

I actually purchased my FrontPage 2000 CD, without the rest of the Office
suite, a few years ago. (Accompanied by a 2nd CD containing the program,
Image Composer) About six or eight months ago the middle hole developed a
crack that grew into the data and subsequently became worthless. After
querying Tech support for replacement procedure, I am shocked and disgusted
to learn that Microsoft actually has the Guile to charge ANYTHING for a
legitimate replacement, let alone $25.00 or $30.00! Nobody else does. For
example, the same thing happened to a couple of Borderbund tutorial CD's of
mine and these friendly capitalists fell all over themselves to promptly -
No, IMMEDIATELY - mail a replacement to my home for nothing. Shame on you
Microsoft. It's so piggish.

I refuse to pay twice and please don't insult my intelligence and try
justifying it as some sort of RE-STOCKING fee. Take a lesson from Borderbund
and nearly ALL of your competitors. If a little guy like me is willing to
shell out the CASH for legitimate software instead of getting it from the
file sharers or burning it, you'd better wake up and give this "endangered
customer population" some tender loving care instead of sticking your nose in
the air and demanding even more of my hard earned $$ cash $$.

Sorry for the length of the post. I was solicited for "any suggestions" on
the FrontPage Add-in site. Am I alone here?

Be grateful they will replace it at any cost. It's not their fault that your
disk was damaged/lost/whatever. They could just tell you Pbbbbbbbbbbbt! and
then you'd have two alternatives. Buy it again or use another program
(spending more money). Broderbund is a great company and I use several of
their products. But I also take care of my disks so I don't have to find out
just how benevolent a company is willing to be.

You also have to remember that there are going to be people who "lose" their
software just to get another copy. We pay more than we have to for most
products because some people don't think the rules/laws apply to them.

Not that this helps you, but I've **never** had a CD disk crack from the inside ( spindle hole )
out.
If these all "cracked" using the same CD drive, I would consider repairing / replacing the drive.

Yah, well, sometimes you gotta take responsibility and pay for our own carelessness...I have hundreds of CDs over the years and have never had one crack...not even the free CD "coasters" AOL used to send out.

Besides you're even lucky they can replace software that's 5 years old...I'm kinda surprised they still support/have it.

And, I have yet to have Ford fix a flat tire on my 5 year old Mustang either...why do you think stuff should be free?

Back in the Pleistocene Age, when Word came in a set of seven or so
floppies, I was backing up my Word floppies when I was distracted by the
doorbell and I overwrote one of the floppies. I called Microsoft and asked
if they could replace that one floppy and I would send them the overwritten
one as proof. To my surprise, they sent me a whole new set of Word floppies
and did not even ask me to pay the postage. I don't think I have to tell you
what a great impression that gave me of Microsoft.

I would not expect Micosoft to continue that policy today with all the
thievery that goes on, but still, little considerations make a big
impression.

It's fairly common practice for companies that actually do offer a
replacement CD to charge something similar to this. Some of them will charge
a lot, lot more (though still less than the price of a new version of the
product or an upgrade). The fact is though, most of them charge a fee for a
replacement. Broderbund may be an exception, but then again Broderbund needs
to hold onto any customers they have as they aren't the power they once were
and are now more a fringe player who's best selling products are typing
tutorials (which I buy regularly for children and think they're great) but
that's most of it.

If the CD itself is defective and can be returned to the store purchased at
is one thing, replacing a cd that was accidentally damaged or lost is
another. Many companies keep the price a little higher than just a few
dollars simply to help cut down on piracy. If you could get a new CD for a
couple dollars, more people would order one and then perhaps pass it on to a
friend or relative, or simply just order backups to have which increases
more handling costs.

At least you don't have software that requires a hardware dongle for
security and have it lost/broken, then you really have to pay big bucks to
get a replacement.

Speaking of dongles. I have a proprietary security program I use regularly - the software is free but the dongle was 300 smackers...need I tell ya how many times I've lost my damn dongle?

The only cd I had crack came that way and I promptly returned if as in the
next day. Five years later I wouldn't even have thought to ask.

message Yah, well, sometimes you gotta take responsibility and pay for our own
carelessness...I have hundreds of CDs over the years and have never had one
crack...not even the free CD "coasters" AOL used to send out.

Besides you're even lucky they can replace software that's 5 years old...I'm
kinda surprised they still support/have it.

And, I have yet to have Ford fix a flat tire on my 5 year old Mustang
either...why do you think stuff should be free?

Well I am sure sorry to hear this
I downloaded front page and the laptop fryed so I got a new laptop
I had tried to find a place I could re download and use my old registration,
but then found fp was being faded out so I downloaded the EW which was
suggested, and there seems to be no way of using it like the frontpage,
perhaps hotdog is still out there somewhere
