Eliminating Messinger Service Pop-ups

I have Windows XP and a broadband/AOL connection. I keep
getting annoying pop-ups (noting "messenger service")
even when I am not on line. These pop-ups offer to sell
me software to stop these annoying pop-ups. I feel like
I am being blackmailed! Is there anything I can do via
the XP software or a microsoft patch to stop these pop-
ups?

You should ask your question in a newsgroup about windowsxp, as this one
specializes in security in Access, the database product.

You should be running a firewall, but ask in
microsoft.public.windowsxp.

Go to your control panel

then performance and maitenance

then administrator tools

find services

then find messenger and disable the service
