ELIMINATING SYMBOLS

How do I eliminate viewing the various symbols when I am
typing eg, the the right arrow when indenting, the "P" for
a return, or a . for a space?

Click the ¶ button on the toolbar, or press Ctrl+Shift+8. For more info,

I think I had the same problem as you-this should work for
you. There is the "P" (paragraph symbol)on the
Formatting toolbar. It is probably depressed right now
(as you might also be, because of this!). Click on it to
un-select it.
