eliminating "US Letter" and other defaults (WordX)

Is it possible to permanently disable "US letter" and other default
preferences that never get chosen? Despite the fact the entire world
including the USA uses A4, Microsoft insists on this compulsory
default. A straw-poll of my US friends and colleagues indicates
universal use of A4, so whence comes this odd anachronism?!
Even templates jump back to it, as they also jump back to the "Times"
font.
If anyone knows how to get in the back door of Word X, and suggest an
appropriate smart-bomb to eliminate these unwanted defaults, I'd be
grateful.

Hi Grant:

Start with your Normal Template. Make sure English Australia or whatever
locality you use is set in Mac OS, then close Word (must be Quit) and delete
or rename your Normal Template.

When Word restarts, it will create a new Normal Template.

Now, Open your Normal Template using File>Open and make sure you get the
template open and not a copy of it.

Use File>Page Setup to specify A4 and ensure you have selected the correct
printer (the one you are actually going to use).

While you are in there, use Tools>Language to set the language you actually
use, and click the Default button.

Then use Format>Style to check the Language set on Normal style: it should
be the one you just chose: if not, correct it.

Finally, save the Normal Template and quit Word again (to ensure the
settings are saved before anything changes them.)

That should fix every new document you create into the paper size and
language you actually use forever more :)

Hope this helps

It odd that one would want A4 (although if that's wahts wanted) When you
first install Office it ask for preference.

Also when I install or reinstall the Driver file for my Printer (HP
990cse) it ask for preference for paper size and it will open page setup
with based settings based on your choice.

In my area of the US I can not find any store (OfficeMax/Staples/Office
Depot/Super Wal-Mart, Sams Club) that carries anything other than 8.5 x
11, 8.5 x 14 (legal) It is availble special order through their catalogs.
