Eliminating Word web tags

U

Ulrich

If one saves a document with "save as web page" word
inserts a lot of useless tags like span and others, that
not only risk making it unreadable for certain browser but
also inflate the file size. I already heard that there are
word macros that eliminate all these tags automatically.
Does anyone know where I can get them?

Thanks

Hi Ulrich

The reason that Word saves so much stuff in an .html document is to allow round-tripping. Html doesn't support all the fancy
formatting that Word can manage. So if Word is to re-open the document later and retain all its formatting, it has to save that
information somewhere.

In Word 2002 (and 2003), choose File > Save As. In the Save As Type box, choose "Web Page, Filtered". If you do that, you won't be
able to round-trip the document back to Word with all its previous complexity of formatting. But you will reduce the file size by
omitting a lot (not all!) of the superfluous tags.

And, ensure that you have used styles appropriately in your document. Avoid direct formatting as much as possible, because it adds
to the file size and extra html tags.

Hope this helps.
