Email and To Do's

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: Exchange

First off, I'm using the new Web Services version of Entourage 2008 with Snow Leopard.

I've flagged an email as a "to-do", but it's not showing up in the Tasks pane. I've tried everything I can think of (changing dates, closing/reopening the program, etc.). Exchange is picking up all the other changes (from category colors to deleted emails to changes in time on events), so it's not a matter of Entourage communicating with Exchange.

Any suggestions?

A To Do item is not a Task.

A Task is an item you create yourself and you enter all the information
yourself.

A To Do is an item you create from something else, such as a mail
message or contact.

The To Do status (flag) should carry over through Exchange, however, I'm
not so sure it will necessarily appear as a Task.

Bill,

Whether I call it a Task or a To Do -- in neither case does the flagged email appear. On a different computer, I fired up Entourage 2004 (recognizing that it wouldn't sync Tasks/To Do's with Exchange). I chose a random email, flagged it, and lo and behold, it appeared in the To Do pane of the Calendar window. That's what I WOULD expect from Entourage 2008, Web Services. But that's not happening.

Is this a program bug, or am I missing a preference choice?

Further mysteries.

In Outlook (run on Windows, via Parallels), the flag -> To Do appears as it should (that is, the flag that I set yesterday on the emails in Entourage appears in Outlook, with the appropriate to-do). So the info IS going to Exchange.

Also, I got an Office Reminder of one of the flagged emails. It simply isn't appearing in the "To Do" pane.

I just need to make sure we're understanding each other.

A flagged item (a To Do) should synchronize the flagged status to
Exchange and then to another Entourage or Outlook client. Only the
flagged status will sync. It will not appear as a task.

So this IS a difference from Outlook 2007 (in the Windows Office Suite) and Entourage 2004?

Currently in either of those programs, if I flag an email for follow-up tomorrow, then that email's subject line appears in the "To Do" panel in the Calendar window as a To Do for tomorrow. (Let's leave aside the matter of syncing with Exchange--that's unimportant.)

In Entourage 2008, if I flag an email for follow-up tomorrow, NOTHING appears in the To Do panel, but I can count on an alert message tomorrow. I'd much rather see the item in the To Do list.

If you have access to all three programs (or even Entourage 2004 and Entourage 2008 Web Services Edition), might I suggest that you try a test and see how differently/similarly they perform this action. If they all perform exactly the same, then there may be a problem with my installation of Entourage 2008, and I might need to reinstall.

Hi Gary,

when I flag an email in Entourage 2008 Web Services Edition, the e-mail
shows up in the To Do List, which you can find in the folder list just below
the Tasks in Tasks View. It also shows up in the To Do List that you can
enable in Calendar View.

Michel,

Thanks so much! It must be with my installation of the program. I'll be installing another copy on my laptop early next week. I'll see if that version resolves this in MY world!

But your answer was very helpful!

Gary
