Hello

Outlook 2002

When attaching a power point document to an email and then you try to open
it while attached and before sending it, Outlook freezes up.

Any idea pls ?

Thanks

Hi Best,

If possible, don't open the file attachment when it is in sending in Outlook. Open it when it has been sent out.

If the message was stuck in the Outbox folder and Outlook hung up, refer to the following step to get back to normal status.
----------------
1. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete > in the Process tab, choose outlook.exe, press End Process to end it.
2. Disconnect from the network.
3. Open Outlook 2002.
4. Go to the Outbox folder, delete any message stuck in it.
5. Connect to the internet and resend the message as necessary.

If anything is unclear or if you have any other concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Regards,

Emily Lin

Thanks Emily.

I don't know whether this is the righ group.

The attachment (either .pps or .png) fail to open when the user receives
them in an email. The error message is this: "you cannot open or save
c:\documents and settings\{profile}\local settings\temporary internet
files\OLK229\{attachementname.pps}. Document of this type cannot be received
in email message.

I went to the location the above message pointed and found the document with
0 kb. Tried to open it and an error occurred saying "can't be shown because
it contains no slides". I emptied the folder but this did not make any
difference. If there is a key in the Registry to alter please let me know.

Thanks a lot.

Best

Hi Best,

Do you mean that the user cannot open any attachment in Outlook?

If the user saves the attachment to the local hard disk (such as C:\), can he open the file?

Follow the steps below to check the download setting.
---------
1. In Outlook, click Tools > Options > in the Mail Setup tab, click Send/Receive.
2. Choose All Accounts, click Edit.
3. Highlight the email account. In the Folder Options field, is the 'download header only' checked? If so, check 'download complete item
including attachments' instead. click OK.
Test the issue agian. What is the result?

When you say 'if there is a key in teh registry', what do you refer to? Do you refer to the registry key which set the location for
attachment sotre? If so, check the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Outlook\Security\Outlook
Data Type: REG_SZ
SecureTempFolder

If anything is unclear or if you have any other concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Thanks Emily

No, the user can't save or open the file. The error says: you cannot save
or open...". This problem applies to only .pps or .png attachments. Please
note that because we work in a huge company (300.000 members of staff), our
systems are run with lots of restrictions. For example, there is no Run, no
full control panel and so many other restriction even though some of us here
have local Admin Right, and just local Admin Right :). This is the reason
why I often search for any registry key to alter because I can do that.

Regards

Best

Hi Best,

The registry key mentioned by Emily defines where the attachments are opened and stored temporarily:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Outlook\Security\Outlook (Outlook 2000)
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\Security\Outlook (Outlook 2002)
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Security\Outlook (Outlook 2003)
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Security\Outlook (Outlook 2007)

Data Type: REG_SZ
OutlookSecureTempFolder

If we delete the OutlookSecureTempFolder, when Outlook start for the second time, it will recreate the registry key with a brand new path. So please make
sure the user has full permissions on the path. You may not see the directory from Windows Explorer, but you can copy the path into the Address bar.

I hope it will be helped.
