All of a sudden I am noticing that email that have been opened are displaying
the unread icon in outlook. If I open them again - the icon does not change.
Any ideas?

Hi,

Does the issue occur on all the emails? Please send a test email to yourself and then read it. Does the icon changed as Unread? First, please
take a screen shot of the Outlook window which display the unread icon for the Read Messages.

How to take a screen shot, please follow the steps below:
------------------------------------------------------------------
a. When screen shows up, press the Print Screen key (right of F12 key) Note: nothing will happen.
b. Open MS Paint program (click Start menu > All Programs > Accessories > Paint).
c. Click Edit (menu) -> Paste or press Ctrl + V.
d. Click File (menu) -> Save. Save it as a *.jpg file and send it to me as an attachment. My Email address is (e-mail address removed).

** suggestions:

If the issue only occurs in some kind of the messages (such as the voicemail), it may caused that you Outlook has no special knowledge of
Voicemail item. Because of that, Outlook uses a generic icon that does not change when the message is marked as read. The only indication
that the message is read is that it is no longer bold.

If the issue occurs on all emails in Outlook, there should be something wrong in Outlook. Follow the steps below to see if it works.

#1 clean views
============
1. Exit Outlook 2007.
2. Click Start > Run > type outlook /cleanviews, click OK.
3. Does the Read message still display a Unread icon?

#2 Repair the Office installation to see if it works.

If anything is unclear or if you have any other concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Hello Emily,

I´ve the similar problem but I´m using a different environment.

It´s a virtual XP Pro machine with Outlook 2003. There I´ll check different mailboxes, mainly some entry points from departments.

I´m logging into this VMware with different user accounts (for each entry point a single user account) and with most of them it´s fine but one isn´t changing the UNREAD/READ icon.

I´ve started Outlook for this user already with /cleanview, but nothing changed. The mail appears after reading without the bold characters but the icon is still on closed envelope.

So I don´t it´s a problem with the Outlook installation because the other users are fine.

Regards
Andreas Keyser
