Email in Inbox subfolders does not appear in total INBOX new mail

Since upgrading to Outlook 2003 SP1 - I no longer can readily see when new
mail is routed to subfolder of my Inbox (using Rules)

I inadvertently moved one folder inside of another and did not know I had a
dozen message waiting! Embarrassing!

Is there a setting in 2003 to pass the new mail info up thru the folder
heirarchy?

No. Why not use the Unread search folder?
