email Mail Merge Outlook 2003

When I set up a mail merge as a test using Outlook 2003 contacts as the data
file and MS Word to do the merge - I selected only one name in the Contacts
folder to send the email to but instead it sent it to random people in the
contacts list (84 people before I hit Escape!).
Why did this happen?
Also, to avoid this in the future, should I set up a test mail merge folder
with just the contacts I want the emails to go to?

I would do it this way:

Close Word.

Open Outlook and select the specific Contacts in Outlook then click | tools
| mailmerge | select the options there and Word will start up automatically.
Use Insert Merge fields to add the data fields form the Contacts.
