"During" the mail merge, Word will attempt to send MAPI commands to the
"Default" email application.
I believe Entourage is the only Apple email program that supports enough
MAPI to process the commands correctly.
The Help does not specifically say that it "requires" Entourage. But I do
not think you can get it to work with another application.
You can quickly flip the default email application back to whatever you
prefer after the merge.

Is this the same in Word 2008? Or can an email merge be performed with Apple
mail from Word 2008?
If not does entourage 2008 have to be default email client in office 2008 in
order to perform a merge to email?
