email merge with an attachment

When doing an email merge, starting from Outlook, you
compose your document in Word. I would like to send a file
as an attachment to letter used as the merge form.

If the document is on a webserver, then it is relatively
easy to specify that as a web hyperlink. Now, what if the
document is on a local drive and it is going to multiple
recipients (outside our network)? If I insert object|file,
the message comes through but not the object.

Any suggestions?
